City Island's Grand Dame Recognized for Years of Community Service

At the Annual 2023 Meeting of the 45th Precinct Council Breakfast, HRRP’s Violet Smith, was honored with the Award for outstanding community contributions.

In her role as a long-term Board member of the Hutchinson River Restoration Project (HRRP), Violet has made numerous important contributions to our mission to improve the ecological well-being of the Hutchinson River. For example, her handling the HRRP table at events such as the annual City Island Art City Fair for many years. She would always engage members of the public, at all ages and educational levels, with her natural charm. Another example is Violet’s role with HRRP’s annual Hutchinson River cleanups. She would recruit numerous volunteers, build community partnerships, and collaborate with the NYC Parks Department and the media, resulting in multifold outcomes of substantial river cleanup and public awareness.

Violet is a very special person and well deserves election to the prestigious, albeit informal, title of City Island’s Grand Dame.
