The HRRP's Cleanups
The HRRP hosts various cleanup events throughout the year to maintain and restore the natural beauty of the Hutchinson River and its shoreline. These include river cleanups, where volunteers gather in small boats and along the shoreline to remove trash and debris polluting the river. Join us in making a difference and preserving the precious Hutchinson River’s ecosystem.

Winter Walk at
Nature Study Woods

Bundle up and join HRRP for another fun and informative winter walk along the Hutchinson River in Mount Vernon. This light hike is a great way to get outside during the colder months while learning about the history and natural environment of the river. Along the way, we’ll explore the ruins of an old railroad, talk about how Mount Vernon once sourced its drinking water, and learn about the fish and wildlife that call the river home.

This walk is also a wonderful opportunity to connect with your community, enjoy the outdoors, and spend a refreshing winter day learning and exploring together.
An invasive species removal and trash cleanup will take place in connection with this walk on February 21st.

Invasive Cleanup and Removal at Nature Study Woods

Last year, HRRP made significant improvements at Migui Park by removing more than 2,000 pounds of garbage and clearing overgrown plants from the path, making the park safer and more accessible for the community. Building on that progress this year, we are focusing on removing invasive plant species that crowd out native vegetation. By clearing these invasives, we can give indigenous plants the space and sunlight they need to thrive, helping restore the park’s natural balance and create healthier habitat for local wildlife.

This hands-on activity is a great way for families and community members of all ages to make a positive impact on the local environment while spending time outdoors together.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, connect with your community, and spend a refreshing day learning and exploring.

Invasive Cleanup and Removal at Migui Park

Two weeks ago, HRRP hosted a winter walk through Wilson's Woods, where we learned about the history and ecology of the area.
Now it’s time to give back.
HRRP will be restoring this special area by removing invasive plants and collecting trash along the river. This work will improve the appearance of the riverbank and help prevent litter from entering the water. The project offers a hands-on opportunity for families and community members of all ages to work together outdoors while supporting the local environment. Last year, volunteers removed nearly 2,000 pounds of garbage and improved access along the path for residents. Although meaningful progress was made, continued effort is needed to fully restore the area.
