In 2024, Ruby Olisemeka, one of HRRP’s dedicated board members, set out to transform public access to the Hutchinson River. Her vision was to reclaim a section of the river that was already in use but had been neglected, overgrown, unmaintained, and in need of care. She applied for a grant from the Long Island Sound Community Impact Fund through the Westchester Land Trust and received funding!
Today, that vision is becoming a reality. The Westchester Land Trust, HRRP, City of Mount Vernon Department of Planning and Community Development, NYS Department of Transportation, Westchester County Planning Department, and Save the Sound are all joining forces to make this space open and welcoming to all.
The project is still in its early stages, and community meetings will be held soon to hear directly from residents about what they’d like to see in the plans. Stay tuned for further details.
