In late March, the Hutchinson River Restoration Project partnered with NYC H2O for a shoreline cleanup along Pelham Bay Park. With the help of 30 dedicated volunteers, more than half a ton of trash was removed from the beach and surrounding shoreline.
The debris collected ranged from large items, including a floating dock device, to countless small pieces of plastic and litter that threaten fish, birds, and the overall health of the waterway. Every piece removed helps protect wildlife and prevents trash from breaking down into harmful microplastics.
The Pelham Bay shoreline is also part of the Hutchinson River watershed, meaning that keeping these coastal areas clean directly benefits the health and water quality of the river itself. By removing trash throughout the watershed, we help reduce pollution entering the river and improve the ecosystem as a whole.
NYC H2O has long been dedicated to protecting and cleaning New York City’s waterways and shorelines, and we are excited to begin working together on future restoration and cleanup efforts. Partnerships like these help strengthen community stewardship and create a larger impact for the health of the Hutchinson River and surrounding coastal ecosystems.
