Exploring Split Rock's History and Its Hidden Environmental Challenges

After a long and cold winter, HRRP organized its annual Split Rock Winter Walk. Twenty-four attendees joined the event, eager to reconnect with nature and learn about the area's rich past. What started as a refreshing outdoor activity quickly revealed some unexpected challenges that affect the trail and its surroundings.

Discovering the Environmental Issues Along the Trail

As the group moved along the Split Rock trail, they encountered several bags of trash thrown from the nearby freeway and abandoned grocery carts filled with garbage that made the path difficult to navigate. Parts of the trail were also overgrown, forcing participants to move carefully through dense vegetation.

These conditions highlighted the growing impact of litter and neglect on the area, which threatens both the landscape and local wildlife. The HRRP team used this moment to remind participants about the upcoming invasive plant removal and cleanup events on the calendar.

Learning About Split Rock’s True History

During the walk, Amelia shared insights into the history of Split Rock, noting that many local stories mix fact with myth. She emphasized the importance of understanding the site’s true history, including evidence of Indigenous presence and early settlement.

This added depth to the walk, helping participants better appreciate the cultural and historical significance of the landscape.
