In a recent interview with Claire Lazerwitz for The Bronx Bulletin, our Project Manager,
Melissa Sotelo-Wright shared the Hutchinson River Restoration Project’s (HRRP) efforts to improve water quality and restore the Hutchinson River. Melissa discussed the challenges faced by City Island, particularly the pollution affecting the waters of Eastchester Bay, and how HRRP is working to address these issues through community-driven initiatives. She highlighted the organization’s annual clean-ups at the Thomas Pell Wildlife Sanctuary and the importance of raising public awareness about water pollution by offering eco-tours and providing hands-on opportunities to engage with the river. Melissa also emphasized the significance of community involvement in environmental restoration.
Thanks to a 2024 grant from the Long Island Sound Community Impact Fund, HRRP was able to expand its reach, adding a boat to facilitate more EcoTours and increase access to the river. With the support of local residents and partners, HRRP continues to grow, aiming to restore the river and protect its surrounding ecosystem for future generations.
