The Split Rock Invasive Cleanup turned into more of a large-scale cleanup than an invasive removal effort. Bags of garbage and recycling were scattered across the landscape, with mattresses, grocery carts, and even bicycles abandoned without a second thought.
For World Water day, HRRP showed up at Split Rock with a team of nine volunteers who removed nearly 3,000 pounds of garbage in just a few hours, making a significant impact on the area. Volunteers utilized abandoned grocery carts found on-site to transport collected garbage back to the street, where the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) was able to pick it up and ensure proper disposal.
Bronx 12 News covered the event and featured a story on the Hutchinson River Restoration Project. Click here to watch the full video.
During the cleanup, team members also spoke with nearby residents, who expressed concern that the growing amount of trash has made them reluctant to use the park. Their feedback highlights the broader community impact of illegal dumping and the importance of continued cleanup and restoration efforts.
